Media coverage often shows bias when it comes to financial fraud. Wendy Osefo, a reality star on The Real Housewives of Potomac, and her husband allegedly staged a robbery and filed multiple insurance claims for stolen items. Yet, when officials executed a search warrant, they found some of those items still in the house. While serious, the way the media reports on Wendy’s case differs sharply from coverage of white Housewives accused of similar or worse crimes.Take Teresa Giudice, who was sentenced to prison for fraud and bankruptcy schemes; Kim and Kyle Richards, known for substance abuse arrests and family drama; and Erika Jayne, embroiled in legal battles related to her estranged husband’s embezzlement case. Articles covering these stories tend to be fact-based, legal-centric, or framed as “tragic or interesting” stories. In contrast, Black Housewives like Wendy often face coverage that emphasizes character judgment, social media reactions, and a “fall from grace,” using adjectives like “brazen,” “audacious,” and “shocking,” while spotlighting lifestyle and public persona.
The difference is clear in article titles. For Wendy Osefo:
“‘Real Housewives’ star and former Wesleyan professor faked $200K burglary with husband, records show” – CT Insider
“RHOP’s Wendy Osefo arrested for alleged insurance fraud — fans in disbelief” – People
“Potomac Housewife, Professor Wendy Osefo, Indicted on Multiple Fraud Charges” – Washington Post
These titles include outside opinion and emphasize Wendy’s career, public persona, and statements. By contrast, Teresa Giudice’s articles are straightforward and factual:
“Teresa Giudice’s Bankruptcy Case Reopened After She Served 15 Months” – ABC News
“Real Housewives of New Jersey Star Teresa Giudice Sentenced in Bankruptcy Fraud Case” – US Department of Justice / News Release
Black people involved in fraud or financial crimes are more likely to have their character, morality, and lifestyle scrutinized, even when the financial scale is similar. Now I’m not saying if you do something illegal that involves any of these cases that they should not be looked into or written about, but let’s make sure we use the same criteria of privacy as we do with White reality stars.
