Algorithms Is The NEW Attentive Partner

Updated: Dec 11, 2025

TikTok and its algorithm can be both fascinating and dangerous. The way the app quickly learns what you like sometimes in just a few seconds is both impressive and unsettling. It curates your feed so precisely that it feels like it knows you better than you know yourself. In some ways, I genuinely enjoy this. I get all my interests in one place: motivational videos, trendy dances, new fashion looks, gym routines, and couples sharing their relationships online. At one point, my feed even started showing tarot readings, something I never thought I would care about. For a while, I ignored them, but over time, curiosity got the best of me and I started watching them more often. That’s the power of the algorithm it learns what keeps your attention and slowly influences what you become curious about or even start to value.

What I’ve realized, however, is that my TikTok feed rarely includes news or politics. Those topics can feel stressful or heavy, so I don’t usually interact with them. Because of that, the algorithm assumes I’m not interested and keeps them off my “For You” page entirely. As a result, my online world becomes narrow and selective. Without my parents or the people around me who regularly talk about current events, I might be completely unaware of what’s happening in the world. This shows how the algorithm can quietly shape how we see things or don’t see them at all. It can make people, especially young users, uninformed or naive about the real issues beyond their screens.

The more time I spend on TikTok, the more I realize how influential it is. For many people, it feels like a world of its own. You can spend hours scrolling, laughing, or learning new things, but at the same time, it’s easy to lose track of time and disconnect from reality. The app can be a stress reliever, but it also requires discipline. Knowing when to put the phone down is something that takes effort and self-awareness. Sometimes I have to remind myself that real life is happening outside of what’s trending online.

It’s also important to surround yourself with people and experiences that are different from what appears on your feed. Real-life conversations, classes, and even uncomfortable news stories can help you build a more balanced perspective. Social media doesn’t always show the full truth it shows what’s most engaging.

Ultimately, while I appreciate how TikTok brings together all my interests, I’ve learned that the algorithm shouldn’t be my main source of information or worldview. It’s designed to keep users entertained, not necessarily informed. Finding a balance between what entertains me and what educates me is key. I think being intentional about how we use the app and staying aware of its influence can help make TikTok less of a trap and more of a tool.
